Jaffa Cakes – Cake or Biscuit?
One of the topics on our forum got me to thinking. The topic asks Is the Kit-Kat a biscuit or a chocolate bar? This simple question seems to have split the KXC community into two distinct camps with the majority going with the chocolate bar option at this time.
So I have posed another question; Is a Jaffa Cake a biscuit or a cake? Its called a cake and has a sponge base, tangy chocolate filling and a rich dark chocolate top. It has the texture of a cake but it looks like a biscuit and it is stacked with the biscuits in the supermarket. It seems to be generally accepted as a biscuit but it’s make-up is undeniably cake-like.
If you have never heard of the wonderful Jaffa Cake check it out in our Library. In fact the cake/biscuit/cookie is so delish whatever you choose to call it, it has found its way into our Candy Award Hall of Fame.
It seems the official line from McVities, the company who create Jaffa cakes, is that they are indeed cakes. This was backed up with a legal case so that the Jaffa Cakes would be exempt form VAT charges in the UK (you have to pay tax on biscuits here in jolly old England but not on cakes, go figure!!!). The question still remains though, is it really a cake or was this simply a subtle way to avoid VAT?
In my opinion Jaffa cakes are biscuits and will continue to appear in my biscuit tin along with the Chocolate Digestives and the… …erm… …Kit Kats!
